Mexican President urges US to halt immigration raids during Gold Cup match

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s President, has urged United States authorities not to conduct immigration raids at the Gold Cup match in Los Angeles — where Mexico is set to face the Dominican Republic tomorrow.

This statement follows recent immigration raids in Los Angeles targeting undocumented migrants — policies that have sparked protests across major cities.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) previously made a now-deleted social media post stating they would be “suited and booted” for Club World Cup matches.

“We don’t believe that at any soccer match there will be any immigration action… we call for none to be taken by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” said Sheinbaum during her press conference.

CBP later clarified that they routinely provide security at major sporting events. Meanwhile, Mexican consulates in the US have established protocols to assist citizens who may be detained.

The Mexican national team will continue their Gold Cup group matches in Arlington, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada.
