Red Bull shakes pp lineup: Yuki Tsunoda replaces Liam Lawson after just two races

According to Motorsport.com, Red Bull Racing has made a surprising decision to swap Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda after just two races this season — a move that’s extreme even by the standards of a team known for its quick decisions.

The decision came after a high-level meeting in Dubai attended by team principal Christian Horner, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, and Thai shareholders. Tsunoda gets his long-awaited opportunity at Red Bull after more than four years with the junior team.

Key factors behind the decision include:

  • Data analysis showing no signs of rapid improvement from Lawson

  • Honda’s financial backing worth around €10 million

  • Tsunoda’s recent impressive performance

  • Strategic risk management for both drivers

Marko hinted at this change in the Shanghai paddock, stating, “Yuki is in the form of his life” and “this is a different Yuki than the one we saw in previous years.”

Meanwhile, Horner emphasizes that the decision is purely sporting-based, with the goal of retaining the drivers’ world championship and reclaiming the constructors’ title. However, the real challenge lies in car development — not just driver changes.

Despite the shake-up, Red Bull remains focused on maintaining its dominance in Formula 1. The upcoming races will be crucial in determining whether Tsunoda can meet the high expectations set by the team.
