Former England U-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd reveals Parkinson’s disease diagnosis

Aidy Boothroyd, former England U-21 manager, has publicly revealed his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis following a routine health assessment conducted by the League Managers Association (LMA).

The 54-year-old coach has enjoyed an impressive career, notably becoming one of the youngest Premier League managers when he led Watford to promotion at just 35 years old. He later replaced Gareth Southgate as England U-21 manager, a role he held for five years before moving to Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League.

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in November 2021. The news came as a massive shock to me, following what I expected to be my routine LMA Annual Health Assessment. It has taken me time to feel ready to share my diagnosis,” Boothroyd stated.

Despite the challenges posed by the disease, Boothroyd remains determined and positive, emphasizing his focus on physical fitness to help slow its progression. LMA CEO Richard Bevan commended Boothroyd’s resilience, highlighting his continued active role within the organization.
