Wrexham CEO confident club can reach English Premier League

Michael Williamson, Wrexham CEO, expresses confidence that the Welsh club has the potential to reach the English Premier League. This statement comes as the club prepares to face new challenges in the Championship following promotion from League One.

Wrexham — owned by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for the past four years — has achieved historic success with three consecutive promotions. The club now faces major challenges in the Championship, where their average attendance of 12,757 ranks among the third lowest in the league.

“Moving from League One to Championship is a very large step. We’re playing against clubs that have been recently relegated from Premier League with large parachute payments. It’s difficult and requires significant financial investment,” says Williamson.

Over 50% of the club’s current revenue comes from international sources. Global expansion strategy includes preseason tours to Australia and New Zealand — where the team will face Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC, and Wellington Phoenix.

Williamson, who previously worked at Inter Milan, also opens possibilities for expansion into Asian markets as the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary gains popularity in the region. The main focus is ensuring the Wrexham brand remains strong and not solely dependent on its owners’ fame.
