Promoted Wrexham AFC are conducting their historic first preseason tour in Australia and New Zealand — a crucial preparation ahead of their Championship debut in 2025-26 season.

Coach Phil Parkinson acknowledges the significant challenges awaiting his team in England’s second tier competition. “The squad is not where we need it to be at the moment,” he stated after arriving in Melbourne.

The packed schedule with numerous midweek fixtures becomes the main focus of team preparation. Parkinson has to work extra hours managing player recruitment from Australia — the significant time difference forces him to stay awake until early morning.

  • Defeated Melbourne Victory 3-0
  • Will face Sydney FC featuring Douglas Costa
  • Final match scheduled against another A-League side

The team also gains valuable experience visiting Melbourne Cricket Ground and practicing cricket with Sydney Thunder team. Defender Eoghan O’Connell highlights the tough challenge in the opening match against Southampton. “It’s going to be as tough as it gets, away to Southampton. We’ll have to get to grips with it pretty quickly,” he stated.
