Wolfgang Pikal Speaks Out about Indonesian National Team Naturalization

Wolfgang Pikal, former assistant to Alfred Riedl in the Indonesian national team, has voiced his opinion on the PSSI’s naturalization program, suggesting that while it has its merits, it should not be seen as a long-term solution for Indonesian football.

Short-Term Boost, Long-Term Risk?

Under the leadership of Erick Thohir, PSSI has actively promoted naturalization efforts to strengthen the national team. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against China and Japan, Indonesia has called up 32 players, of which 19 are naturalized.

Although no additional naturalized players will join the squad for the June FIFA Matchday, the policy continues to draw attention from both local and international media.

Pikal believes the move is effective in boosting short-term performance but could undermine the development of local talent if not handled carefully.

“This could be dangerous if we depend too much on naturalized players. It’s okay for now, but PSSI must invest in youth development and local coaching,” Pikal said.

Mixed Reactions Domestically

The naturalization policy has sparked divided responses across the country. While some football observers and fans see it as a strategic step to compete internationally, others argue it reflects a lack of faith in Indonesia’s grassroots system.

Despite the criticisms, PSSI insists that naturalization is part of a broader strategy, not a permanent crutch.
