Williams Team Orders Issue at Miami GP Resolved in Minutes

Williams team principal James Vowles confirmed that the brief tension between Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz during the Miami Grand Prix was resolved in just two minutes after the race ended.

The situation unfolded when Albon, who was dealing with water pressure issues, received an instruction to stay behind Sainz. Despite that, he used DRS to overtake, prompting Sainz to express his frustration over team radio.

Williams admits internal miscommunication

“This was purely our team’s fault in giving instructions,” explained Vowles.

“The overly long and complex communication led to misinterpretation — one engineer told the driver not to attack, while others were still assessing the situation.”

New protocol implemented to prevent future incidents

To avoid such issues going forward, Williams has now introduced a new communication protocol with key improvements:
  • Short and clear instructions for all engineers

  • Direct commands, eliminating excessive explanation

  • Post-race debriefs to clarify details

  • Streamlined communication only from relevant personnel

“After a brief post-race meeting, both drivers immediately understood the situation,” added Vowles.

“With this new system, I guarantee similar incidents won’t recur.”
