Vivianne Miedema Rejects Retirement Amid Injury Struggles

Manchester City forward Vivianne Miedema has firmly rejected suggestions for early retirement, following persistent injury setbacks that have limited her playtime over recent seasons.

The 28-year-old Dutch striker recently sustained a hamstring injury while representing the Netherlands national team, forcing her to end the current season prematurely. This comes after a previous knee injury had already sidelined her for over three months.

“To those telling me to retire: thank you for your opinion. But I don’t care and it’s not time yet,”
— wrote Miedema on Instagram.

Since moving to Manchester City last year, Miedema has only made 11 league appearances, echoing her injury-troubled final season at Arsenal, where an ACL injury in December 2022 restricted her to just eight WSL games.

City’s injury list continues to grow, with nine first-team players currently unavailable — including Mary Fowler, who also suffered an ACL injury during the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United. The demanding fixture schedule, which featured eight matches in 29 days last March, has raised concerns over the physical toll on players.

Miedema emphasized that the issue lies beyond personal endurance, pointing to a need for better physical and mental safety standards in women’s football.
