VAR In Liga 1 Successfully Reduces Referee Decision Controversies

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, introduced under the leadership of PSSI Chairman, Erick Thohir, has significantly improved officiating quality in the 2024/2025 Liga 1 season. The initiative, implemented by PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB), has been praised for enhancing match integrity.

Controversies Before VAR’s Introduction

Prior to the adoption of VAR, Liga 1 was frequently marred by contentious decisions that directly influenced outcomes, including:

  • Invalid goals

  • Disputed penalty awards

  • Controversial red cards

These incidents led to widespread criticism and undermined trust in referee judgment.

VAR as a Second Eye for Referees

With VAR in place, referees now have the ability to review key moments in real time, ensuring more accurate and fair decisions. The system acts as a “second eye”, especially in high-stakes moments.

According to PT LIB, the VAR system has already contributed to 306 matches this season, with noticeable improvements in decision accuracy.

“VAR has helped create a fairer competition, with fewer protests and greater acceptance of results,” a league official stated.

Improved Professionalism and Acceptance

The technology has made clubs and players more accepting of match results, as referee decisions are seen as more objective and consistent. It has also elevated the professional atmosphere in Indonesia’s top football league.
