Van Gisbergen dominates NASCAR Cup Mexico with largest victory margin

Shane van Gisbergen, three-time Supercars champion, has again proven his road racing prowess in NASCAR — this time at the inaugural Cup Series race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico.

The New Zealand driver dominated the race by leading 60 of 100 total laps — making history with a 16.567-second victory margin that stands as the largest in NASCAR Cup Series in 16 years.

Before the race, van Gisbergen reached out to fellow Red Bull athlete Max Verstappen for advice about the best racing lines in wet conditions. Though Verstappen was focused on the Canadian Grand Prix, the F1 champion provided some valuable tips.

“I just look for every advantage I can. I know he’s raced here in the rain. When I walked out onto pit road this morning, it was amazing how slick it was,” van Gisbergen revealed in the press conference.

This victory secures van Gisbergen’s position in the NASCAR Cup playoffs — while also opening a clear path to the Rookie of the Year title, unless Riley Herbst can win a race before the regular season ends.
