Tyler Adams supports promotion and relegation system in MLS

United States national team midfielder Tyler Adams supports implementing promotion and relegation in Major League Soccer (MLS) — a system he believes would enhance the league’s competitiveness.

Unlike top leagues in England, Spain, and Germany that use the tier system, MLS has maintained its closed league format since its establishment in 1996.

“I would like to see promotion and relegation in MLS. I think it would add to the competitive nature of the league because there’s a risk of going down when you don’t play well, adding pressure and excitement for the fans,” said Adams, who currently plays for Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Adams, who started his career at New York Red Bulls before moving to Europe with RB Leipzig —experienced relegation while playing for Leeds United last season.

United Soccer League (USL) recently announced plans to launch a Division One professional league in 2027 —to compete with MLS. This system will include three separate professional competition tiers independent from MLS.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber states the closed system remains key to league investment — with expansion fees reaching $500 million for newest club San Diego FC, though future changes haven’t been ruled out.
