Junior Tennis Tournament TDP Tanah Datar 2025 Officially Opens with 141 Young Athletes

Tanah Datar, June 18, 2025 – The 2025 Tanah Datar Regent Cup Junior Tennis Championship, part of the national TDP (Pelti-Recognized Tournament) calendar, officially commenced on Tuesday morning at the tennis court of the Tanah Datar Regent’s Office Complex. The event was inaugurated by Regent Eka Putra and marks the third consecutive edition of the tournament.

A total of 141 young athletes from across Sumatra and outside West Sumatra have registered to compete. Participants are divided into six age categories: U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-18, making it one of the most inclusive youth tennis events in the region. The tournament is expected to run until the end of the week, showcasing emerging talent from across the archipelago.

In his opening remarks, Regent Eka Putra welcomed all participants and expressed gratitude to the organizing committee, KONI Tanah Datar, sponsors, and volunteers who contributed to the tournament’s success. He also emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and fair play during the competition.

“Welcome to Tanah Datar. Best of luck to all athletes—compete with integrity, and to our referees, judge with fairness. As hosts, it’s our responsibility to ensure the best experience for every guest,” said the Regent.

Local Government Commits to Supporting Sports Infrastructure

During his speech, Regent Eka Putra reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to improving sports facilities in the region. He mentioned that toilet renovations at the tennis complex will be carried out this year to ensure better comfort for athletes and visitors alike.

“We want to provide decent and athlete-friendly facilities. This year we will fix the toilets, and we hope that, rain or shine, athletes will be able to compete in comfort,” he added.

His remarks reflect broader efforts by the regional administration to support youth development and foster interest in competitive sports.

Participation Grows as Tennis Enthusiasm Spreads

Minda Imran, Head of the Organizing Committee, revealed that this year’s participation increased significantly compared to the previous edition. Athletes hail from various cities across Sumatra, including Langsa, Medan, Pematang Siantar, Palembang, and several areas in Riau and West Sumatra.

“Alhamdulillah, we’ve seen strong enthusiasm this year. The growing number of participants shows that junior tennis is gaining traction among young athletes,” said Minda.

She also highlighted that the arrival of athletes and contingents from outside the region is having a positive economic impact on the Tanah Datar community. Local accommodations such as homestays and guesthouses are now filled with guests, contributing to increased tourism and hospitality revenue.

KONI’s Full Support for Tennis Development

The Head of KONI Tanah Datar, Novitra Kemala, also voiced his support for the championship. KONI has provided trophies and prizes for the winners and reaffirmed its commitment to making the tournament an annual agenda, with the goal of growing it into a larger regional sports event in the future.

“With support from all stakeholders, this event will grow in scale and help build a foundation for regional sports excellence,” he stated.

KONI continues to encourage collaboration among schools, clubs, and regional sports associations to ensure long-term athlete development in tennis and other disciplines.

Fostering Talent and Boosting Local Potential

Beyond the competition itself, the Tanah Datar Regent Cup Junior Tennis Championship serves as a vital platform for identifying and nurturing young tennis talent. With a strong foundation of community support, government investment, and organizational commitment, the tournament is paving the way for future tennis champions from West Sumatra.

As interest in tennis continues to rise, this event plays a key role in shaping the next generation of athletes who may one day represent Indonesia on the national and international stage.
