According to the local prosecutor, two supporters died on Thursday before the start of a Copa Libertadores match between hosts Colo Colo and Brazil’s Fortaleza at the Monumental Stadium, Santiago.

Eastern District Prosecutor Francisco Morales revealed — a group of supporters attempted to enter the stadium through the Casa Alba building adjacent to the venue, but security forces blocked this attempt.

“A crush occurred resulting in the collapse of a barrier fence,” said Morales. “We are investigating the possible involvement of a police vehicle in this incident.”

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene — while the other passed away at a nearby medical clinic.

The ongoing match was subsequently suspended in the 70th minute with the score at 0-0 — after home supporters staged a protest by throwing objects onto the field.

Fortaleza players quickly took shelter in the locker room, while captain Esteban Pavez and Arturo Vidal attempted to calm Colo Colo supporters.

CONMEBOL as South American football’s governing body expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families.
