Toto Wolff Addresses Mercedes Power Unit Concerns in F1 2025

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, has firmly responded to concerns about Mercedes power unit issues affecting both the factory team and customer teams this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the third practice session at the Austrian GP, Wolff explained that not all technical failures stemmed from power units — some problems were actually chassis-related.

“First of all, it wasn’t all power unit failures. I think there were chassis failures. Also, I believe it was Alonso in Monaco – wasn’t a power unit failure,” Wolff explained.

Mercedes experienced serious issues with Kimi Antonelli’s car in Spain and Imola. Meanwhile, Williams driver Alex Albon had to retire in the Canadian GP due to engine problems, and Fernando Alonso lost 160 horsepower due to an Energy Recovery System failure.

Mercedes’ focus has now shifted to power unit development for 2026 — a year that will mark Aston Martin’s departure to Honda and Alpine’s entry as a Mercedes works team.
