Sandro Tonali revealed that his spectacular goal in Newcastle United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford was largely intended as a cross.

“Honestly, 70% cross, 30% shot. It was too strong, so powerful. It was difficult for the keeper, but also difficult for me,” said Tonali.

The Italian midfielder’s goal — struck from the right touchline in the 74th minute — caught Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken off guard and secured three points for the home side.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring at St. James’ Park and set a record as the first club player to score 20 Premier League goals in consecutive seasons. However, the Swedish striker had to be withdrawn in the 66th minute due to a groin injury.

“He maybe got a bit of luck with the finish, but he’s done that consistently, he’s always in the right place. I don’t think he was 100%, that’s why we withdrew him,” explained manager Eddie Howe.

The victory lifted Newcastle to fifth place in the standings with 50 points — one point ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea who face Tottenham Hotspur.
