Tim Mayer announces FIA presidential bid following controversial dismissal

Tim Mayer, son of late McLaren figure Teddy Mayer, has announced his candidacy for FIA presidency ahead of the British GP — a move that has sent ripples through the motorsport world.

The British-born American has a deep-rooted history in motorsport — starting with his father’s leadership of McLaren following Bruce McLaren’s death in 1970.

Mayer’s motorsport career began in 1992 as Emerson Fittipaldi’s business manager. He later established G3 Communications and held various significant positions in American racing.

His relationship with FIA spanned from 2009 to 2024, ending with a controversial dismissal via text message following the US GP incident. A conflict of interest arose when he represented the race organizer in a track invasion case.

“For a federation that relies on volunteers, to fire by text somebody who has made a significant contribution does not speak well of the management of the federation,” Mayer stated regarding his dismissal.

In announcing his candidacy, Mayer emphasized that his move isn’t about revenge — but rather improving FIA governance which currently faces criticism for lack of transparency.
