Three MLS clubs ready to face tough challenge at FIFA Club World Cup

According to competition records, Major League Soccer (MLS) has only claimed three continental titles in 30 years — an achievement now facing a more prestigious challenge.

Inter Miami, LAFC, and Seattle Sounders will represent MLS at the FIFA Club World Cup starting June 18 — a tournament featuring 32 elite global clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Atlético Madrid.

This challenge comes at an unfavorable time — Vancouver Whitecaps recently suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Cruz Azul in the Concacaf Champions Cup final two weeks ago.

“We have to be honest that the level is much higher than what we’ve faced in Concacaf and MLS,” stated Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami’s coach.

According to Opta rankings:

  • LAFC stands at 126th globally
  • Inter Miami ranks 146th
  • Seattle Sounders sits at 191st

Despite facing steep challenges, this tournament opens opportunities for MLS clubs to prove themselves and change the “retirement league” perception — especially after the arrival of Lionel Messi and other world-class stars to Inter Miami.
