Taylor Fritz Begins Summer Hard-Court Campaign with Confident DC Open Victory

American tennis star Taylor Fritz made a strong statement to open his summer hard-court campaign, securing a straight-sets victory in the Round of 32 at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open on Wednesday, July 24 in Washington, D.C.

The No. 2 seed and world No. 12 defeated British qualifier Liam Broady 6-3, 6-4 in just 78 minutes on Stadium Court at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, launching his summer campaign with a sharp and focused performance.

“I felt great out there today,” said Fritz after the match.

“It’s always important to start strong, especially on hard courts, which I love playing on. The fans here are incredible, and I’m looking forward to the next match.”

The 26-year-old Californian was dominant behind his serve, delivering 10 aces, winning 85% of his first-serve points, and saving all three break points he faced. He broke Broady once in each set, capitalizing on key moments while keeping his unforced errors low.

This marks Fritz’s fourth main draw appearance in Washington, where his best result was a quarterfinal finish in 2021. The American is looking to build momentum ahead of the ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, and ultimately the US Open, where he aims to surpass his career-best Grand Slam quarterfinal finish.

Earlier this season, Fritz captured the title at the 2025 Delray Beach Open, and he now looks poised for another deep run. With this victory, he moves on to the Round of 16, where he will face Jordan Thompson of Australia, a strong and consistent performer this year.

As the highest-ranked American in the draw, Fritz carries the expectations of a home crowd eager to see one of their own contend for the title—and possibly set the tone for a breakout summer.
