Tanah Datar, West Sumatra – The Tanah Datar Regent’s Cup TDP Junior Tennis Championship 2025 officially commenced on Tuesday (18/06/2025) at the Tennis Court of the Tanah Datar Regent’s Office Complex in Pagaruyung. The event was inaugurated by Regent Eka Putra, SE, MM, in a lively opening ceremony attended by athletes, officials, and supporters from across the region.

In his opening speech, Regent Eka Putra extended a warm welcome to the 141 young athletes competing in the tournament, as well as their coaches and families who traveled from various parts of West Sumatra and beyond, including regions such as Medan, Langsa, Pematang Siantar, Riau, and Palembang.

A Message of Sportsmanship and Hospitality

“Welcome to Tanah Datar. Enjoy the competition and remember to always uphold sportsmanship,” Eka Putra said. “Be respectful to the referees, play fair, and as hosts, let us show kindness and hospitality to all our guests.”

The Regent also expressed his gratitude to the organizing committee, KONI Tanah Datar, and event sponsors for their tireless efforts in making the tournament possible. He emphasized the local government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure in the regency.

“We are continuously working to enhance the facilities. This year, we are upgrading the toilets, and in the near future, we aim to ensure that athletes can compete comfortably regardless of the weather,” he added.

Strong Support from KONI and Local Government

Chairperson of KONI Tanah Datar, Novitra Kemala, highlighted the organization’s ongoing dedication to supporting sports development in the region. According to Novitra, tournaments like this play a crucial role in nurturing young athletes and promoting a sporting culture in the community.

“KONI will always support and guide local sports organizations. We also appreciate the Tanah Datar Regency Government for their consistent backing,” Novitra said.

“We believe that this championship will continue to grow, attracting more participants and wider attention in the coming years.”

KONI also contributes by providing trophies and other incentives for the winners across multiple age groups, recognizing the achievements of these promising young players.

Record Participation and Positive Economic Impact

Tournament committee chairperson, Minda Imran, proudly announced that this year’s championship has surpassed previous editions in terms of participation.

“Alhamdulillah, the number of participants continues to increase. We have 141 athletes this year, divided into six age categories: Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18,” she said.

Athletes are not only representing various cities and regencies within West Sumatra but also coming from other provinces across Sumatra, making the event a true regional highlight in junior tennis.

Beyond the competition itself, Minda also emphasized the economic ripple effect generated by the event.

“This tournament doesn’t only benefit sports development, but it also boosts the local economy. Hotels, homestays, and even local homes are being rented out to accommodate the visiting contingents,” she explained.
