Switzerland keeps knockout hopes alive after beating Iceland at Women’s Euro 2025

Host nation Switzerland kept their knockout stage hopes alive at Women’s Euro 2025 after defeating Iceland 2-0 in Sunday’s Group A match.

Géraldine Reuteler opened the scoring for Switzerland after receiving a perfect through ball from Barcelona youngster Sydney Shertenlieb. Switzerland’s advantage was later doubled by Alayah Pilgrim who managed to score from long range.

Despite a passive start to the match, Switzerland eventually managed to register 15 shots on goal — with Manchester City’s new signing Iman Beney proving to be the main attacking threat. Iceland, despite ranking higher than Switzerland, failed to create quality chances despite recording 12 attempts on goal.

Both teams had moments of brilliance in the first half. Switzerland even managed to find the net through an own goal, but VAR ruled it out due to a foul in the build-up.

This victory means Switzerland can still advance to the knockout phase if they defeat Finland in their final match. Meanwhile, Iceland is eliminated from the tournament.
