Sundhage Remains Optimistic Despite Swiss Exit from Women’s Euro 2025

According to UEFA.com, Switzerland’s coach Pia Sundhage maintains a positive outlook despite their elimination from Women’s Euro 2025 following a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the quarterfinals.

Second-half goals from Athenea del Castillo and Clàudia Pina secured Spain’s semifinal spot — yet nearly 30,000 spectators at Wankdorf Stadium remained until the final whistle to show appreciation for the host team.

“I am disappointed that I have to go back home, but the atmosphere in the locker room and the first half tells me this is a good team,” Sundhage stated during the press conference.

Switzerland, ranked 23rd globally, had some fortune when Spain failed to convert two penalties — taken by Mariona Caldentey and Alexia Putellas. The match concluded with Noelle Maritz receiving a red card.

Sundhage believes this tournament will mark a turning point for women’s football in Switzerland — with crowd enthusiasm and fan zones exceeding her expectations throughout the competition.
