Sporting vs Benfica: Portuguese Super Cup Prediction (31.07.2025)

In the early hours of Thursday, July 31 at 20:45 CET, the 2025 Portuguese Super Cup match will take place at the Algarve Stadium in Loulé between Lisbon-based clubs Sporting and Benfica. The “Green and Whites” achieved a golden double in the 2024–2025 season by winning both the Primeira Liga and the national cup. The “Reds” finished second in both competitions and only managed to win the secondary League Cup.

In the Super Cup clash between Sporting and Benfica, bookmakers do not see a clear favorite, though they slightly favor the “Reds.” A bet on a regular-time win for the “Lions” is offered at odds of 2.78, while their overall victory is priced at 1.97. For the “Eagles,” the same markets are valued at 2.55 and 1.84, respectively. Analysts do not expect particularly high scoring in this match: the total over 2.5 is rated at 1.84, while both teams to score is priced at 1.66.

Sporting

Rúben Amorim is forced to significantly rebuild his team’s attacking play. In both of last year’s title runs, a major role was played by the phenomenal Viktor Gyökeres, who has since transferred to London’s Arsenal. This move greatly improved the club’s finances, but now they must solve the issue of who will become their new goalscorer this season.

There are reports that the club has reached an agreement with Spain’s Almería regarding the transfer of Colombian striker Luis Javier Suárez. Whether he will shine already in the Super Cup match remains uncertain. Overall, the “Green and Whites” have been quite active in the transfer market this summer, so surprises are possible.

Benfica

Bruno Lage’s squad barely had a summer break due to their participation in the Club World Cup. Nevertheless, the “Reds” performed well in America, defeating Bayern Munich 1–0 in the group stage and only losing in extra time to future champions Chelsea in the round of 16.

The “Eagles” have parted ways with a legend — 37-year-old Argentine Ángel Di María. He remained one of the team’s leaders until the very end, but age has caught up with him, preventing consistent top-level performance. Notable additions include Colombian midfielder Richard Ríos and Bosnian right-back Amar Dedić, who strengthen the midfield and defensive flanks, respectively.

Stats and Head-to-Head Record

Interestingly, last season’s finals of both the League Cup and the Portuguese Cup between these two teams ended 1–1 in regular time. Benfica claimed the first trophy through a penalty shootout, while Sporting won the second in extra time.

Prediction

In only one of the last ten meetings has either team failed to score. Based on that statistic, the safe bet is on both teams to score, priced at 1.66.
