Spanish Star Aitana Bonmati Hospitalized Ahead of Euro 2025

Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati — the two-time consecutive Ballon d’Or winner — is currently hospitalized with viral meningitis ahead of Women’s Euro 2025.

The 27-year-old player missed Spain’s 3-1 victory over Japan in a friendly match — she was seen sharing a photo of herself watching the game from her hospital bed via Instagram Story.

“The doctors say that it is controlled. Speaking about meningitis can be frightening, but the situation is under control,” said coach Montse Tome after the match in Leganes.

The Barcelona star has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for the national team — she played a crucial role in the team’s success at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and last year’s Nations League.

Spain will begin their Group B campaign against Portugal on July 3 — the team that has never reached a continental tournament final will face Belgium and Italy in the group stage.
