Spalletti Fired from Italy National Team after Heavy Defeat to Norway

Luciano Spalletti has been officially dismissed from his role as head coach of the Italy national team, following a heavy 0–3 defeat to Norway in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, according to Bolasport.com.

The decision was announced by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), which opted to part ways with the 64-year-old tactician after a performance widely viewed as below expectations.

Despite the dismissal, Spalletti is still expected to lead Italy for one final match, a scheduled fixture against Moldova.

Spalletti confirms dismissal in emotional statement

In a post-match press conference, Spalletti spoke candidly about the decision:

“Last night I had a long conversation with the FIGC President, and he informed me that I would be relieved of my duties,” he said.

“I never intended to give up, especially in difficult moments. I would have preferred to stay and continue the work — but I was dismissed, and I accept the decision.”

Spalletti took over the national team after Italy’s underwhelming campaign in the UEFA Nations League and had been tasked with rejuvenating the Azzurri ahead of the 2026 World Cup. However, the loss to Norway — a team ranked significantly lower — triggered immediate scrutiny and pressure from both fans and media.

FIGC expected to name interim replacement

The FIGC is expected to name an interim coach ahead of Italy’s next qualifiers while beginning the search for a long-term replacement. As of now, no official shortlist has been released.

Italy’s campaign continues with growing urgency as they aim to avoid missing out on a second consecutive World Cup — a scenario that would intensify scrutiny on the national team’s management and development systems.
