Spain rejects favorite status ahead of Belgium clash at Euro

According to recent press conference, Olga Carmona — Spain’s defender who recently joined Paris Saint-Germain — emphasizes that her team avoids the favorite label despite just defeating Portugal 5-0 in Group B of European championship.

“We never mention the word ‘favorite’ internally,” states Carmona. “Football is unpredictable — we just want to collect wins and take things step by step.”

Coach Montse Tomé also stresses the importance of staying grounded after the big victory. The world champions will face Belgium in Thun — a win could secure quarter-final ticket if Portugal fails to beat Italy.

Spain will be strengthened by captain Irene Paredes who missed the Portugal match due to suspension. Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí is also ready to play after recovering from viral meningitis.

“Bonmatí has an amazing mentality and is very focused on this Euro,” says Tomé. “There was some fear at first, but she has recovered well.”
