Spain Makes History in Women’s Euro After Defeating Switzerland

According to reports from Wankdorf Stadium, Bern, Spain’s women’s national team — the reigning world champions — has made history by securing their first knockout stage victory at the European Championships.

Aitana Bonmatí shared her perspective after the match:

“We must value these moments. Sometimes people expect us to win 6-0 in every game. We stayed calm, confident, and patient. We have made history for the country by reaching the semifinals.”

The match proved challenging for La Roja — they missed two penalties and hit the woodwork three times. However, two goals within five minutes from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina secured the 2-0 victory.

The tremendous support from 29,734 spectators filling the stadium wasn’t enough to help the Swiss hosts. Swiss coach Pia Sundhage acknowledged:

“I am proud of Switzerland. Looking at the crowd attendance has been phenomenal. It’s been a once-in-a-lifetime feeling, very emotional.”

Spain will continue their journey to the semifinals against either France or Germany in Zurich next week.
