Sofia Cantore becomes first Italian player in NWSL after joining Washington Spirit

Washington Spirit has reached a transfer agreement with Juventus to bring in striker Sofia Cantore — who will become the first Italian player in NWSL history.

“I’m very proud to join this important club and grateful for their trust in my abilities,” stated Cantore.

The 25-year-old player will join Spirit after the NWSL transfer window opens on July 1 — with a contract through 2027 and an extension option until 2028.

Last season with Juventus, Cantore scored 11 goals in Serie A and two goals in the UEFA Champions League. Her club-level achievements have earned her a spot in Italy’s provisional squad for this summer’s European Championship.

Spirit — currently fourth in the standings — is undergoing a transition period as coach Jonatan Giráldez will soon join OL Lyonnes. Adrián González will take over as head coach with a multi-year contract.

“Sofia is an important signing for Spirit in our effort to build a team for trophies,” said González. “Her experience in Italian leagues and exceptional talent in attack will provide a new dimension for Spirit going forward.”
