Robert Shwartzman Makes History with Rookie Pole Position at Indianapolis 500

Robert Shwartzman has etched his name into the record books by securing pole position for the Indianapolis 500, racing for debutant team Prema Racing, as reported by Motorsport.com.

The 25-year-old driver, who had never competed in an oval race before, becomes only the third rookie in history to start from pole in this legendary race.

“I still can’t fully acknowledge that we’ve managed to take pole position. It’s a really incredible and special moment in my life and career, and I think also for the team,” said Shwartzman.

A unique path to the Indy 500

Shwartzman started his journey in Formula 2, where he competed against top talents like Oscar Piastri and Mick Schumacher. After serving as Ferrari’s reserve driver, he transitioned to IndyCar this season with Prema Racing.

Challenges and breakthrough

Despite having:

  • No oval racing experience

  • Best IndyCar finish of 18th

  • Limited track time

  • Pressure as a rookie

He made the most of intensive preparations in April with full backing from Prema.

“Even in the very difficult moments in life, you’ve still got to believe. That’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve never given up and kept pushing. Now here we are — pole position in one of the three biggest races in the world in our first year,” Shwartzman added.

Eyes on race day

The next big test for Shwartzman will be this Sunday, as he lines up at the front for his first-ever 500-mile race — and his first oval race under real traffic conditions. All eyes will be on the rookie sensation to see if he can convert his historic pole into a dream victory.
