“Our Beloved Enzo” — Sevilla’s Praise for Maresca Sparks Tension After Betis’ Heavy Defeat to Chelsea

“Our Beloved Enzo” — Sevilla’s Praise for Maresca Sparks Tension After Betis’ Heavy Defeat to Chelsea

A heated spark reignited the Seville derby off the pitch — not with goals, but with a congratulatory message. Following Real Betis’ crushing 4–1 loss to Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League final, crosstown rivals Sevilla FC stirred controversy by publicly celebrating the achievement of Enzo Maresca — the coach who led the Premier League side to victory, and notably, a beloved former Sevilla player.

On their official social media account, Sevilla wrote:

“Congratulations to our former player Enzo Maresca on winning the UEFA Conference League.”

While intended as a tribute to a former club legend, the timing — coming immediately after Betis’ first-ever European final — was seen by many supporters as tone-deaf and inflammatory, sparking backlash across Andalusia.

Betis President Fires Back: “They’re in Another War”

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed. Real Betis President Ángel Haro, when asked about the post during an interview with COPE, responded sharply:

“I haven’t seen it, but they’re now in another war. We’re growing, focusing on doing well next year, and they’re in a very different war from ours.”

When pushed further on whether Betis would have done the same had the roles been reversed, Haro replied with sarcasm:

“Well, if it were up to me… Well, never mind. I also congratulate Sevilla on staying in the first division this year.”

The jab, referring to Sevilla’s near-relegation this season, underscores the ongoing tension and rivalry that defines the two clubs’ relationship — even when they’re not playing each other.

Maresca Stays Silent, Focuses on Chelsea’s Future

As the war of words unfolded, Enzo Maresca has remained silent regarding the controversy. The former midfielder, who made over 100 appearances and won two UEFA Cups with Sevilla, has instead directed his focus on Chelsea’s success and future.

Following the final, Maresca emphasized the team’s growth and winning mentality:

“We played with maturity, intensity, and clarity. This is just the beginning.”

For Maresca, the victory marks not only Chelsea’s first UEFA Conference League title, but also a promising start to his managerial career at the European level.

Historic Night for Betis, Despite the Defeat

Despite the heartbreak, the final was a landmark achievement for Real Betis — their first appearance in a European final in the club’s 117-year history. The loss was heavy, but reaching that stage was already a significant leap for the green-and-whites under manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Meanwhile, Sevilla, with seven UEFA Cup/Europa League trophies, continue to cast a large shadow over their city rivals — even when they’re not directly competing.
