Saudi Arabia has declared its readiness to accommodate a potential format change for the 2030 World Cup — which is proposed to include 64 participating nations.

The World Cup format has utilized a 32-team system since 1998 — but will undergo significant changes starting with the 2026 edition in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with 48 participants.

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted across six different countries:

  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Morocco
  • Uruguay
  • Paraguay
  • Argentina

The three South American nations have submitted a formal proposal to FIFA to increase the number of participants to 64 teams — a suggestion that has faced opposition from UEFA and CONCACAF due to concerns about tournament quality deterioration.
