Sauber F1 Shows Major Progress at Austrian GP

Sauber Formula 1 recorded an impressive result at the Austrian GP with an 8th and 9th place finish — their first double-points finish since last year’s Qatar GP.

Jonathan Wheatley, who joined as team principal since April, has brought significant changes — particularly in pit stop performance and race strategy.

“I’m a bit fed up that the technical regulations are ending at the end of the year, because we’re starting to have a bit of fun here!” said Wheatley after the team’s impeccable performance at Red Bull Ring.

The team has shown rapid progress in pit stop efficiency — from a record of 2.42 seconds in Qatar last year to 2.13 seconds for Gabriel Bortoleto’s car at this season’s Spanish GP.

The presence of Mattia Binotto and James Key as technical director has also positively impacted the C45 car development, despite major regulation changes coming in 2026.

  • Improved pit stop performance
  • Better communication strategy
  • Continuous car development
  • Enhanced team spirit

Though only three months into his role, Wheatley has brought significant team culture changes — from communication methods to more innovative racing strategy approaches.
