Satoru Mochizuki’s unique style in leading Indonesia Women’s National Team

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifier match between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan at Indomilk Arena, Tangerang, presented an interesting sight — the unique coaching style of Satoru Mochizuki.

The 61-year-old coach chose to stand beside the substitute bench — different from most coaches who usually position themselves in front of the technical area. Throughout the match, Mochizuki more often communicated through his assistant coach to relay instructions to players.

“Perhaps I’m one of the coaches in the world who doesn’t talk much,” stated Mochizuki after the match.

The former Japan national team player implements a philosophy that encourages his players to take their own initiative on the field — not just waiting for directions from the sidelines.
