Ruben Selles appointed as new Sheffield United manager

Sheffield United has appointed Ruben Selles as their new head coach — replacing Chris Wilder who parted ways with the club by mutual consent following their failed Premier League promotion bid.

The 42-year-old Spanish coach previously managed Southampton and Reading — with his latest achievement being saving Hull City from Championship relegation last season on goal difference.

Wilder, who had earlier extended his contract until 2028, had to end his tenure prematurely after Sheffield United lost 2-1 to Sunderland in the playoff final — with the winning goal coming in injury time.

“I’m obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League. I’m a Sheffielder through and through, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change,” stated Wilder.

This marks Wilder’s second departure from Sheffield United — after his first spell ended in March 2021 when the club was at the bottom of the Premier League table.
