According to Reuters, Ruben Amorim defended his decision to field the youngest Manchester United squad in Premier League history — a move that ended in a 4-3 defeat to Brentford last Sunday.

With an average age of just 22 for the starting players, United recorded their 16th loss of the season and remained stuck in 15th place in the standings, while Brentford moved up to 9th.

“As a club, we need to understand the great responsibility we have right now. We must prepare the squad for different competitions,” explained Amorim after the match.

The Portugal manager rested senior players to focus on the second leg of the Europa League semifinal against Athletic Bilbao, where United led 3-0 on aggregate.

Mason Mount, who scored his first goal of the season, acknowledged that winning the Europa League was the team’s main priority right now, as it’s their only route to the Champions League next season.
