A massive upset unfolded in the first round of the VCT Pacific 2025: Stage 2 lower bracket, as RRQ defied the odds against Gen.G to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory.

This evening high-stakes clash was crucial for both teams, as they badly needed a win to keep their Paris Champions qualification hopes alive. Gen.G entered with significant confidence as one of the region’s powerhouse teams and appeared thoroughly prepared.

However, their recent record against RRQ has been nothing but a rough ride. While they secured a decisive upper bracket final win in Stage 1, they surprisingly fell against them 1-3 in the main Grand Final. And just weeks ago, the losing streak got extended as they saw a 1-2 loss during the group stage.

RRQ, meanwhile, entered on the back of underwhelming performances at the recent Masters Toronto and EWC 2025, leading many to doubt their ability to recapture their Stage 2 peak form. These concerns seemed justified after early losses to DRX and Global Esports – teams generally considered weaker in the franchise circuit.

A reverse sweep for the history books

The match started just like what many have expected: a victory-hungry Gen.G imposed an aggressive playstyle, shutting down RRQ at critical spots. An intense back-and-forth battle on the first map, Haven, culminated in a dramatic 13-10 win for Gen.G.

The intensity carried over to Sunset. It did not take long for Gen.G to dismantle RRQ in the first half, closing it with a dominant 10-2 lead.

Surprisingly, RRQ remained composed under the pressure. They effectively utilised the time out to adjust their strategy, sparking a remarkable comeback. The trio of Cahya ” Nugraha, Bryan “Kushy” Setiawan, and Maksim “Jemkin” Batorov effectively thwarted Gen.G’s assault, slowly closing the gap to stage a stunning 13-11 reverse sweep victory.

This forced a decisive third map on Corrode. While the first half was closely contested, RRQ’s strategy proved superior when switching to the attacker side. They repeatedly outmaneuvered Gen.G, forcing critical errors, and the Indonesian Kings closed out the map decisively 13-6.

The victory propels the Indonesia King into the second round of the lower bracket playoffs, where the squad will face another Korean giants DRX. Although DRX delivered an impressive performance against RRQ last time, tonight’s result against Gen.G serves as a stark warning: RRQ cannot be underestimated when backed into a corner.

Conversely, this loss likely extinguishes Gen.G’s chances of reaching Champions. They currently sit precariously in 4th place in the VCT Pacific standings and could lost their international spot if RRQ and Talon Esports win their upcoming matches, as they may move above from 5th and 6th place.
