Rene Rast Wins DTM Zandvoort Despite Head Injury

According to Motorsport.com, Schubert BMW driver Rene Rast, secured his 29th DTM career victory at Zandvoort — an achievement made more impressive considering he suffered a head injury before the race began.

“Yes, I have a headache,” the three-time DTM champion revealed after the race.

“You really have to concentrate and block out the pain. I took two painkillers before the start.”

Rast’s condition deteriorated after the podium — he complained of dizziness and tingling in his fingers. After receiving initial treatment in an ambulance, he was taken directly to a hospital in Haarlem for CT scan examination.

  • Team principal Torsten Schubert remained unaware of the situation until after the podium
  • Teammate Marco Wittmann who finished second was also oblivious to Rast’s condition

“Quick update: got released from hospital this evening. No injuries detected which means I am ready to go to Le Mans tomorrow,” the German driver wrote on Instagram.

He will drive the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 alongside Robin Frijns and Sheldon van der Linde in the Hypercar class this week.
