French women’s national team pillars Wendie Renard and Eugénie Le Sommer have rejoined the national squad at the Clairefontaine training center — showing the same enthusiasm as they did 15 years ago when first called up.

The two Lyon players — now 34 and 35 years old — are the oldest in the French squad, in stark contrast to Lou Bogaert and Melween Ndongala who are just 20 years old.

Le Sommer has achieved an extraordinary feat by becoming the first French player — from either men’s or women’s teams — to reach 200 international caps, surpassing Sandrine Soubeyrand’s record. The veteran striker needs just six more goals to reach 100 goals for Les Bleues.

“Eugénie broke the record and she will continue to thrive. She is still very much needed, bringing freshness and experience. She talks a lot to the squad, especially with the younger ones,” said head coach Laurent Bonadei.

Meanwhile, Renard who missed the recent match due to a foot injury — remains the captain and best defender in the squad. Her experience in defense and set-piece threat makes her irreplaceable.

Euro 2025 in Switzerland starting this July likely represents the final major tournament for both senior players.

Though their roles differ — with Le Sommer as a substitute and Renard as a starter — they share the same goal of securing their first international title with France.
