Real Madrid Signs Left-Back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica

Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for €50 million — marking the return of the player to the club that developed him.

The 22-year-old left-back is a Real Madrid academy product who departed for Manchester United in 2020. After spending time in England — including loan spells at Preston North End and Granada — Carreras joined Benfica.

Last season proved exceptional for Carreras with the Portuguese club — featuring in 32 league matches and 10 Champions League games. His move to Madrid completes the lineup of new defensive recruits, following the arrivals of:

  • Dean Huijsen
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold

Carreras‘s presence is expected to strengthen Madrid’s left-back position — an area that has struggled with Ferland Mendy’s frequent injuries and Fran García’s inconsistent performance last season.
