Racing Legend Shigeaki Hattori Dies in North Carolina Car Accident

According to Huntersville Police’s confirmation, Shigeaki “Shige” Hattori — renowned racer and team owner — died in a three-vehicle traffic accident on I-77 in Mecklenburg County on Saturday morning.

Hattori, who came from Okayama Japan, started his American career in 1995 — securing two Indy Lights victories before competing in Indianapolis 500. His best IndyCar achievement was finishing sixth at Texas Motor Speedway.

After switching to NASCAR Truck Series as a driver, Hattori established his own racing team — Hattori Racing Enterprises which claimed 14 victories and series championship in 2018 with Brett Moffitt.

Shige was known for his relentless drive, focus and competitive spirit. He had a unique gift to constantly inject a light-hearted attitude and one-of-a-kind sense of humor into his race teams that will never be forgotten,” stated Hattori Racing.

Shigeaki Hattori was a passionate racer and highly successful team owner. He was a beloved member of the garage who worked tirelessly to lift our sport and his people,” said NASCAR’s official statement.
