PSSI Plans to Host Classic Indonesia vs Malaysia Match in September

PSSI Eyes Friendly Showdown Between Indonesia and Malaysia in September

Erick Thohir, Chairman of PSSI, has hinted at the potential return of one of Southeast Asia’s most heated football rivalries: a friendly match between the Indonesia national team and Malaysia. This long-awaited clash could take place during the upcoming FIFA Matchday in September.

Rivalry Renewed: A Look Back at Their Last Encounters

The last meeting between the two regional powerhouses happened in the 2020 AFF Cup, where Indonesia triumphed over Malaysia with a resounding 4-1 victory. That match remains a memorable moment for the Red and White squad and their supporters.

However, in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (SUGBK), the outcome was different. Under Simon McMenemy’s management, Indonesia suffered a 2-3 defeat at the hands of Harimau Malaya.

Opponent Options for FIFA Matchday

As September’s FIFA Matchday approaches, PSSI is actively considering multiple opponents for international friendlies. Currently, three potential teams are on the table:

  • Malaysia

  • Lebanon

  • Kuwait

While no official confirmation has been made, fans are especially enthusiastic about the prospect of reviving the emotional and historic rivalry with Malaysia.
