PSG crush Atletico Madrid 4-0 in Club World Cup opener

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) began their Club World Cup campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena — setting a season attendance record with 80,619 spectators.

Luis Enrique watched his team dominate with goals from Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha in the first half, while Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-In added two more in the second half after Atletico defender Clement Lenglet received a red card.

“We had the objective of making history this season, but this is a new chapter,” stated Luis Enrique during the press conference. “The club is hungry, the fans are hungry, the players and team are hungry — that’s a good feeling.”

Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid’s coach, refused to blame the hot weather for his team’s defeat.

“They’re a great team, a young team. They’ve always had good players, and now they’re a team,” commented Simeone.

Atletico will face Seattle Sounders on June 19, while PSG will meet Brazil’s Botafogo at the Rose Bowl.
