Portugal vs Spain Women’s Euro match begins with tribute to Diogo Jota

The Women’s European Championship opening match between Portugal and Spain began with a moment of silence to remember Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva — who recently passed away in a car accident in northwestern Spain.

Players from both teams wore black armbands, while spectators and players remained silent for 20 seconds — followed by respectful applause. The tragic accident occurred when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames.

“We’ve lost one of our own. He was someone who followed the Navegadoras closely. We’re deeply saddened — there aren’t many words. He will never be forgotten,” expressed Portugal coach Francisco Neto.

Portugal supporters brought tribute banners to the stadium:

  • “Thank you for everything”
  • “Rest in peace”

Portuguese Parliament President Jose Aguiar Branco announced that the Assembly of the Republic will hold a vote to formally honor the deceased brothers’ contributions to national sport.
