Portaluppi: Brazilian Coaches Deserve More Recognition After Club World Cup

Renato Portaluppi, Fluminense’s manager, shared his perspective after his team’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the Club World Cup semifinal — the Brazilian team’s achievement should open the world’s eyes to local coaching talent.

The former striker, also known as Renato Gaucho, has a long history with Fluminense — he led the club to Rio de Janeiro championship as a player in 1995, and now transformed the relegation-threatened team into strong competitors within three months.

“I hope that not only the world but Brazil as well can look at Brazilian coaches in a different way and appreciate them more,” Gaucho stated.

Supporters gave the team a warm reception at MetLife Stadium despite the defeat. Brazilian teams’ achievements in this tournament were impressive:

  • Flamengo defeated Chelsea in group stage
  • Botafogo shocked Champions League winners PSG
  • Four Brazilian teams advanced to round of 16

Portaluppi emphasized that his team will maintain this positive performance for their supporters in Brazil.
