Pope Leo XVI Welcomes Serie A Champions Napoli at Vatican

In a heartwarming gesture of faith and sport, Pope Leo XVI welcomed Napoli, the newly crowned Serie A champions, to the Vatican on Tuesday, as reported by Vatican News.

The visit came just one day after Napoli’s victory parade through central Naples, celebrating their dramatic end to the 2024–2025 season.

Napoli Clinch Fourth Scudetto in Dramatic Fashion

Led by Italy national team captain, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Napoli had recently secured their fourth Scudetto after a decisive 2–0 win over Cagliari, finishing just one point ahead of Inter Milan.

In a moment of humor, Pope Leo XVI addressed the players and staff with a smile:

“The press says I am an AS Roma fan, but you are welcome! This is what the press says. Not everything you read in the press is true.”

A Jersey Gift, A Blessing, and a Special Message

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis presented the Pope with a blue Napoli jersey, featuring the number 10 and printed with “Papa Leone XVI,” signed by the entire squad.

Head coach Antonio Conte, known for his devout Catholic faith, showed deep reverence by kneeling to kiss the Pope’s hand.

In his message, the Pope emphasized the value of teamwork, unity, and sportsmanship, and passed along congratulations from his cook Rosa, a Naples native and loyal Napoli supporter.
