Pochettino discusses criticism and US team challenges in Gold Cup

Mauricio Pochettino, the United States national team coach, emphasizes that he’s not seeking revenge against critics — despite his team’s recent positive results in the 2025 Gold Cup.

After suffering four consecutive defeats, the US team bounced back with a commanding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in their tournament opener. Pochettino’s squad now has a chance to advance to the knockout stage if they defeat Saudi Arabia at Q2 Stadium.

“We’re here to build a team and search for the best combinations. In football, it’s normal when you win everything is fine, and when you lose criticism comes,” stated the Argentine coach.

Pochettino praised their upcoming opponents — Saudi Arabia is an experienced team with players characterized by aggression, speed, and good technique.

Regarding player availability, Tyler Adams and Johnny Cardoso who missed the opening match have trained with the team and could get playing time.

Despite concerns about inconsistent attendance numbers early in the tournament, Pochettino is confident stadiums will be full for next year’s World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
