Following their disappointing performances in Copa America 2024, the United States and Mexico national teams opted for managerial changes. Mauricio Pochettino was appointed as the USA’s head coach, while Javier Aguirre returned to lead El Tri.

Despite Pochettino’s prestigious coaching background—with previous spells at Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea—his tenure has been underwhelming so far. The USA has recorded only five wins in eight matches, suffering three losses, including defeats in the Nations League semifinal and third-place match.

Tyler Adams, the USA midfielder, pointed out the team’s fundamental issue: “Every player needs to fully commit to what we’re doing. Small things like duels, tackles, and game intelligence—which we show at our clubs—often disappear when playing for the national team.”

In contrast, Mexico under Aguirre has enjoyed a strong start, with five wins and one draw. Their standout achievement came when they clinched the Nations League title.

“It’s unfair to say we won only because of courage,” said Aguirre after celebrating Mexico’s victory in Inglewood.

Raul Jimenez has emerged as a key figure for Mexico, delivering decisive goals against Canada and Panama. Aguirre now has a solid foundation heading toward the 2026 World Cup, with a core group of four to five players already established.

Both teams will face a crucial test in this summer’s Gold Cup—offering Pochettino an opportunity to turn the USA’s fortunes around, while Aguirre looks to sustain Mexico’s positive momentum.
