Oscar Piastri has shown significant improvement at the start of the 2025 Formula 1 season — after trailing his McLaren teammate in the previous two seasons.

The Australian driver’s qualifying statistics were less than impressive — with Lando Norris leading 15-7 in 2023 and 20-4 in 2024. However, the situation has begun to change this season.

In the opening race in Australia, Piastri was just a tenth of a second off Norris’s pole position. Meanwhile in China — a circuit that was previously his weakness — he secured pole position and victory.

“It’s not just about details like lap times or tire temperatures. It’s about all the little things that when combined can be the difference between first and second position,” explained Piastri.

The young driver emphasized the importance of thorough preparation — especially at the Shanghai circuit which has unique characteristics with high load on the front left tire. Unlike last year when he struggled and finished eighth, he now shows dominant performance.

Currently, Piastri sits fourth in the drivers’ standings — 10 points behind Norris. Although 22 races remain, he stays focused on maximizing every opportunity without dwelling too much on the points gap.
