Philippines Stun Malaysia with 2-0 Victory in U-23 Mandiri Cup

In the opening match of the 2025 U-23 Mandiri Cup, Philippines recorded a stunning 2-0 victory over Malaysia — marking their best performance in this tournament after previously never advancing past the group stage.

18-year-old Otu Banatao shined with two first-half goals. The first goal came in the 9th minute from Javier Mariona’s cross, while the second was scored five minutes before halftime thanks to Uriel Dalapo’s assist.

Under captain Gavin Muens‘ solid leadership in midfield, Philippines implemented effective defensive and counter-attacking strategies. Goalkeeper Nicholas Guimarães also impressed with several crucial saves.

Malaysia actually dominated the match with 70% possession but failed to capitalize on their chances. Two of their shots hit the woodwork — including Haqimi Azim Rosli‘s individual effort, while one goal was disallowed for a foul.
