PGMOL — the English referees’ body — has acknowledged a VAR error during the Merseyside derby at Anfield. James Tarkowski’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister should have resulted in a red card.

Referee Sam Barrott only showed Tarkowski a yellow card in the 11th minute — while VAR Paul Tierney decided not to upgrade the punishment to a red card.

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, responded to the incident:

“I don’t want to comment about the situation because so many people already commented on that. Even people who don’t like Liverpool a lot were so clear and obvious about what the decision should have been. Was I surprised? No.”

Liverpool secured the victory through Diogo Jota’s lone goal — the result keeps The Reds firmly at the top of the table with a 12-point advantage.
