Pedro Neto given freedom to play after losing close friend

According to club information, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has given Pedro Neto complete freedom regarding his decision to play in the Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras — following the tragic news of his close friend and Portugal national team colleague Diogo Jota’s death.

Diogo Jota, 28, passed away alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident in northern Spain. Jota and Neto previously played together at Wolves — they had also recently helped Portugal secure the UEFA Nations League title last month.

“Pedro is very sad, probably more than sad. We will support any decision he makes. It’s completely Pedro’s decision whether he wants to play or not,” stated Maresca.

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella also voiced his support for his teammate.

“This morning he was devastated, but we tried to stay together and support him. Football becomes secondary in times like these. The most important thing is showing respect and our love,” said Cucurella.
